PAGEANT Talks Presents:
Miss Colorado United States 2017 Amber Jackson

Introduction: Thank you so much for the opportunity to tell everyone a little bit more about myself. I am originally from Sebring, Florida, a small town in south central Florida. I grew up spending my free time either on the lake or at our small family cattle ranch. I attended the University of Florida and received a Bachelor of Science in Applied Physiology and Kinesiology with a Minor of Art in Urban and Regional Planning and then continued my education at UF and obtained a Master of Science degree in Sports Medicine. I was a member of Alpha Delta Pi sorority and have been a diehard Gator fan my whole life; pretty sure the first sentence I learned was ‘Go Florida beat Georgia’. I’ve combined my education and my love of sports to work in all kinds of settings with every kind of client from rec league to professional athletes. I started a sports medicine program at a rural hospital in Florida, taught high school anatomy, was the athletic trainer and taught psychology at a college in upstate New York and took a year off to work in marketing, promotions and modeling before moving to Colorado to work with the Steadman Clinic and Vail Summit Orthopedics. I have a love for travel and adventure and love continually adding and taking things off my bucket list. I can’t decide if my favorite music is country or show tunes, one of the other will be playing during a drive. In my spare time you can find me doing something outside (hopefully on the mountain or the water), cheering at a game, or attending a concert or play.

How did you get involved in pageants?
When I was young I wanted to do everything my older sister did. Luckily, I’m blessed with an awesome role model of a sibling and that path has had many benefits, including pageant life. I held a title in my hometown pageant and thought that was the beginning and end of the pageant career but in college a sorority sister convinced me to compete in Miss University of Florida. By that time I caught the pageant bug.

Why did you decide to compete for the title of Miss Colorado United States?
After moving to Colorado I wanted to be involved in my new community and really immerse myself in as much as possible. Having the pageant platform has helped me meet more people and continue in philanthropic events.

When you heard your name called and put on that sash what emotions or thought were going through your head?
I am so excited to represent Colorado at Miss United States. It’s a crazy mix of happiness and nerves to stand on the stage and then know that you have a bigger one waiting for you.

What was the first thing you did after the pageant?
The Miss Colorado pageant was help in New Mexico so my friends and family were patiently waiting to hear the results. The first thing I did was take a picture of the new crown and sash and sent it to my mom!

What are you looking forward to during your reign?
I am really passionate about my platform and a couple other charities that I have been working with for a few years. I cannot wait to use the Miss Colorado and Miss United States stage and titles to help get more involved myself and spread the word. I’m also really looking forward to being more involved with my community and traveling around Colorado since I know this amazing state has so much to offer.

Tell us about your platform?
My platform is the Challenged Athletes Foundation. It is an organization that provides opportunities to people with physical challenges to help them pursue fitness and athletics. The goal is to help increase self-esteem, encourage independence and enhance their quality of life. Also, I love that it helps athletes with physical challenges meet others that face the same kind of day to day as they do. I work along with a bracing company in my current profession that is also involved with CAF and I have been helping take it a step further and make sure that people in third world countries that do not have as much access to prosthetics and injury equipment and bracing will be provided with these needs through donations from patients that outgrow their equipment or have no more use for it.

I love traveling and exploring new cities across the country. If I were to visit your hometown where would you take me?
In Colorado you have to see the mountains and the beautiful Denver skyline. Since I’m a bit of a sports junkie we would check out a Broncos, Rockies, Avs, Nuggets or Rapids game for sure! But if you are coming to my hometown in Florida we would spend the day on the lake I grew up on and take the boat over to the dock at Don Jose restaurant for some ceviche before riding horses or four wheelers in the groves or woods. You wouldn’t get away before drinking sweet tea on the porch and getting a piece of my aunt’s pecan pie to go.

What are you looking forward to the most at Miss United States?
My favorite part of any pageant is meeting all the girls. It is such a unique experience to be able to meet so many girls that are the cream of the crop from wherever they’re from. I have made some lifelong friends through pageantry.

What advice would you give to someone who was going to compete in their very first pageant?
Be yourself and have fun! It’s a subjective sport. You can only control who you are and how you represent yourself on stage and in the interview. It is such an awesome opportunity to really learn who you are and present that to a group of judges and an audience.

Who are your heroes?
I’m so blessed to have such an amazing family full of role models. My dad was such a strong man emotionally, physically, mentally and spiritually and I strive to have that kind of strength and help others the way he did. Like I mentioned before, I wanted to grow up and be my sister. She is so kind and patient and is love personified. My mom is the kind of quiet hero who is so willing to help and has that mother bear kind of support that is untouchable. Leading with quiet confidence, helping others, and exuding joy are qualities that make them my heroes.

What should every woman try at least once in her life?
Move somewhere that you don’t know anyone and make it an adventure. Even if it doesn’t work out at least you tried and I guarantee you will learn something.

What is the best advice you have ever received?
“Put your game face on. and don’t let ’em see you sweat” My dad used to say this before just about anything. Math test, piano recital, pageant, or job interview. Reminding myself to stay calm and be brave has helped in countless situations. Working in the medical field I’ve had to be the calming force in stressful emergency situations and instill confidence in those around me.

What’s your one biggest pet peeve?
Being unkind….Kindness can go such a long way in making your own life and other lives better. The ripple effect is amazing.

Describe yourself in two words?
Dynamic and loving

What makes you laugh?
Pretty much everything. I love to laugh and be around people that want to share stories, jokes and smiles. But if we are being specific my sister makes me belly laugh with stories about my niece and nephew. Also, any good imitation will really do the trick.

What item in your closet do you wear the most?
Currently my snow boots but since winter is finally over my multicolored snake print tipy tops high heels! I will find any reason to try to where those.

What is one item you can’t live without?
I’ve been wearing my mom’s wedding ring for years now and not wearing it feels so off. My parents were together till death parted them so it is such a touching reminder of love and togetherness.
