PAGEANT Talks Presents:
Miss New Mexico United States 2017 Marisa Reza
Introduction: I am Marisa Reza your 2017 Miss New Mexico United States. I am 21 years old born and raised in Hobbs, NM. I am currently a Junior in college at Texas Tech University studying Sociology with a concentration in Criminology and a minor in Psychology. My plans are to attend Law School in the Fall of 2018 and become an Immigration Lawyer.
How did you get involved in pageants?
I became involved in pageants just last year in 2016. My very first pageant was the Miss New Mexico USA January of last year in Las Cruces, NM. I registered for this pageant only 2 weeks before the actual pageant date. I told myself I wanted to try something new and this would definitely be that. I had no prior pageant experience so everything I had gotten myself into was all going to be a first.
Why did you decide to compete for the title of Miss New Mexico United States?
After experiencing my first pageant and learning everything it takes to become pageant ready, I knew I had to give pageantry one more try, but this time with more prep time. I decided to compete for the title of Miss New Mexico United States because of the way I knew I could project my voice and my platform for what I believe in and am fighting for back in Hobbs,NM; to put an end to bullying in schools and having students learn to accept and love themselves as they come!
When you heard your name called and put on that sash what emotions or thought were going through your head?
When I heard my name called, there were just so many emotions running through me all at once. Part of me wanted to scream, part of me wanted to jump, part of me wanted to cry. There is no other feeling that I’ve had that is the same or even close to what i felt on Sunday. It was a definite high that I did not want to come down from. Truly incredible!
What was the first thing you did after the pageant?
The very first thing I did after the pageant was take off my heels and have a nice steak for dinner with loved ones. I definitely got spoiled that night with a delicious dinner at Longhorn Steakhouse.
What are you looking forward to during your reign?
I am definitely looking forward to working with the organization i volunteer for at home that also made me want to pursue my platform even more. The organization; Stop Bullying; Speak up, is a program that I definitely believe in with all my heart and soul. I want this organization to become Nationwide. I want students to know that I am being a voice when they cannot. I was a bully victim myself growing up and in High School. I personally know the challenges these students face day in and day out, and when they feel like there is no one out there fighting for them, they begin losing sense and hope in themselves causing depression and suicide rates to spike. It is my goal to eliminate that, let everyone know that they are loved, they are perfect as they are and they carry purpose in this world!
Tell us about your platform?
My platform is Anti-Bullying/Self love/ Self acceptance. To me this is such a big deal in today’s society. So many younger kids strive so hard to follow trends on the internet, going through harsh and damaging things to make themselves look like someone that they are not meant to be. They begin dieting, they starve themselves, they stop exercising, They begin to feel like they are not good enough and depression kicks in. As a bully victim myself, I know first hand what this was like. I was always bullied for being so thin. I always got asked if my parents ever fed me, if I ever ate. At one point, I had people trying to fight me in the hallways and having food thrown at my face during lunch telling me to eat a sandwich. All of these things made me realize that I have a purpose in this life and that is to make sure others dont go through the same things i did.
I love traveling and exploring new cities across the country. If I were to visit your hometown where would you take me?
If you were to come to Hobbs, NM I would take you to two of my favorite Mexican restaurants and as well as my church. These three places, in my opinion, make you feel so welcomed. That feeling you get at home from where you’re from, they make sure to give you that peace and welcome. Mexican food is very big down here in Southeast New Mexico.
What are you looking forward to the most at Miss United States?
The thing I am looking forward to the most at Miss United States would be meeting all of the wonderful women that worked so hard and were chosen to represent their states. I love sisterhood, regardless if I was to win the title or not. Sisterhood is very very important to me. The bond that begins when meeting your sister queens is something i cherish very much!
What advice would you give to someone who was going to compete in their very first pageant?
Some advice I would give to someone competing in their first pageant would be to try their best regardless of the outcome. Im still fairly new to the pageant world, but I used my first pageant experience as a building block. I observed, I soaked in, I took a step back and always made sure to make time for myself whenever I could. But most of all, HAVE FUN.
Who are your heroes?
My heroes would have to be my mom and my big brother. My mom has always been my rock first off. Through all of the struggling times I went through in High School, she always made sure to remind me that I was beautiful regardless and to accept and love myself as I came. My brother would be another hero of mine because he is someone I look up to. He is enlisted in the Army, has been deployed to Afghanistan, has been through so much, but at the end of the day, his perseverance, his determination, his calmness are all things that I know make me look up to my brother.
What should every woman try at least once in her life?
I believe women should try at least one pageant in their lifetime. I was never a pageant girl. I never imagined myself going through something like this when I was younger. I was always the dancer, but when i actually tried my first pageant, it became something so addicting. It is something that has helped me grow emotionally to be a better person. I have developed some amazing new friends through pageantry.
What is the best advice you have ever received?
The best advice I have ever received would be to always be true to who I am no matter the circumstance I’m under and to always keep God at your side. Staying true to who I am and following in the footsteps that God has set out for me have truly been great!
What’s your one biggest pet peeve?
I truly dislike negativity. Although we all carry it naturally, it is something I try to stay clear of. My personality is very positive based. When someone carries a negative mindset, things tend to go that way. when one has a positive outlook, things tend to go that much better.
Describe yourself in two words?
I would describe myself as Authentic and Bubbly
What makes you laugh?
Anything and Everything make me laugh. I love watching funny videos on Facebook, TV, or seeing my family and friends do silly things. Laughing to me is the best medicine and I’m sure I get my healthy helpings quite a bit each day.
What item in your closet do you wear the most?
An item in my closet that i wear the most would have to be cardigans of some sort. I love layering in the winter and summer. I have tons of cardigans and Kimonos that i use to style up or down any look!
What is one item you can’t live without?
One item I cannot live without would have to be my phone. As cliché as that sounds, it is true. My phone holds everything for me. Pictures, videos, memories, conversations, music, movies, etc.
