PAGEANT Talks Presents:
Miss South Carolina United States 2017 Katie Mode
Introduction: My name is Katie Mode, and I am a 22-year old from North Augusta, SC. I am a student at Charleston Southern University, where I am in the process of obtaining a degree in Hospitality Management. My parents are Tracy and Susan Mode, and I also have two siblings- an older brother, Taylor and a younger sister, Abbie. I am a health-nut and a workout junkie, so I am always looking for new workout outs and healthy recipes to try! I also enjoy cooking new recipes, and satisfying my sweet tooth with baking lots a yummy sweets! I am a huge fan of sports, and love watching football (college and pro) and hockey! You can find me cheering for the University of South Carolina Gamecocks football, the Tampa Bay Buccaneers Football, and the Tampa Bay Lighting Hockey! I have the cutest chocolate lab, named Jameis!
How did you get involved in pageants?
I first started in pageants when I was a freshman in high school. My high school pageant is a huge event in my hometown, so once I competed the first time, I was bit by the “pageant bug,” and have been doing them ever since!
Why did you decide to compete for the title of Miss South Carolina United States?
I had the honor of being Miss Teen SC United States 2013, ever since then I have absolutely loved the Miss United States system and what it stood for. It also helped that I have the best director ever, who makes our year one to remember!
When you heard your name called and put on that sash what emotions or thought were going through your head?
I immediately covered my face and was speechless! My eyes started filling up with tears because I was so thankful and overly excited! I was honestly in shock for the whole week after I was crowned!
What was the first thing you did after the pageant?
After we finished all of our on stage pictures, I immediately went over to my family. I have the best family who always has my back no matter what. My daddy was actually the first one to me, and greeted me with the biggest hug! My next goal was to make it to the pizza place across the street before it closed…. which I succeed!!
What are you looking forward to during your reign?
I am super excited to get out in my community and spread the word of my platform, along with being a role model for girls of all ages!
Tell us about your platform?
Something very near and dear to my heart, is supporting and emphasizing the importance of supporting all Public Safety; EMS, Firefighters, and Police Officers. Which leads me to my platform, S.E.L.F. – Search and Rescue, EMS, Law Enforcement and Fire. My brother is a North Augusta, SC police officer, so that is where my passion for my platform stems from.
I love traveling and exploring new cities across the country. If I were to visit your hometown where would you take me?
North Augusta, SC is a small-cute-southern town. I would definitely have to take you to “Sno Cap” which is an old drive in diner, that has been here since the 1960s! I would recommend getting a burger of your choice, with a side of smiley french fries… Don’t forget the root beer in a frosted mug!
What are you looking forward to the most at Miss United States?
The main thing I cannot wait for, is to represent my beautiful state at a national pageant! I also can’t wait to meet all the other girls from all over!
What advice would you give to someone who was going to compete in their very first pageant?
HAVE FUN! A huge goal of mine in every pageant I compete in, is to have fun! Also, don’t put too much pressure on yourself! It’s suppose to be a fun and memorable experience, not a hassle!
Who are your heroes?
I actually have two that immediately come to mind! My best friend of 10 years, Mary-Louise, battled cancer when we were in middle school, she fought one of the hardest fights I have witnessed and BEAT cancer! She is now cancer-free, super healthy, and we are actually planning her wedding for this coming September! My other hero is my big brother, Taylor. He risks his life every single day as a police officer. I can’t imagine doing what he does every day, and he definitely doesn’t get enough credit for it!
What should every woman try at least once in her life?
Live a full week without wearing makeup! I think so many girls are growing up with the mindset that they need makeup in order to be beautiful, which is definitely not true! I want them to start realizing true beauty comes from within!
What is the best advice you have ever received?
“Control the controllables.” I am huge on trying to make every situation “perfect,” yet that tends to make me miss things. I now fully realize, that I can only control certain things in life. And the rest, will handle itself!
What’s your one biggest pet peeve?
Describe yourself in two words?
Loyal and Hardworking
What makes you laugh?
My chocolate lab Jameis has a funny habit of standing up on his back two legs, so something he does that I crack up at every time, is standing on his back two legs, and wraps his front two legs around you, almost like he’s hugging you! It’s the funniest/cutest thing ever!
What item in your closet do you wear the most?
I would have to say my tennis shoes! I enjoy spending as much time outside as possible whether it’s running or exploring all the nature trails on bike so I’m constantly wearing workout clothes! Not to mention I have a slight obsession with tennis shoes!
What is one item you can’t live without?
When I was 18-years old, my grandparents gave me a ring, that my Grandfather gave my Grandmother when they first started dating at 16 years old. My Grandfather has recently passed away so it is definitely something I hold dear to my heart and wear every single day.
